Description: The Grand Antique Mall, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, presents a 3 PIECE MUSEUM QUALITY COLLECTION from the Spanish American War Naval Battle at Manila Bay, May 1, 1898, on which date the crew on 6 US Naval Battleships, commanded by Admiral Dewey, sank 11 Spanish ships. PIECE 1: Chromolithograph titled, “The Great Naval Battle Of Cavite (Manila Bay), Fought May 1st, 1898 5:30 A.M. TILL 12:30 P.M. (Noon)”. Published by Kurz & Allison, 267-269 Wabash Avenue, Chicago, 1898. Gilded wood frame. Dramatic view of the Manila Bay battle and destruction of the Spanish Pacific Squadron. This chromolithograph is the rarer of two plates created by Kurz & Allison, identified by its typesetting, slight variations in content, and larger size. Few exist. Historians believe the 2 similar plates were created and published, nearly simultaneously by Kurz & Allison, because the first plate was damaged or destroyed before multiple copies could be produced. SIZE: 22.25”H x 27.50”W x 2”D. Paper=19”H x 24.75”W. CONDITION: Good. Clean paper with no tape or repairs. Staining in margins; staining entering image at upper center. WT=10.10 lbs. PIECE 2: Brass engine name plate from the Spanish First Class Gun Boat MARQUES DEL DUERO that sank in Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. One-of-a-kind historic relic. After the war, a U.S. Navy salvage team raised and repaired Marques del Duero. She served briefly in the U.S. Navy as USS P-17, but was decommissioned and scrapped in 1900, at which time the plate was removed from the gun boat’s engine. SIZE: 11”H x 15.5”W. WT=5.25 lbs.
