If you can, you must be viewing"The Flintstones". The creators of Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw and Yogi Bear found that these popular children's programs have a considerable adult viewing audience. Hanna-Barbera Productions decided to take those elements of the children's shows which appealed to adults, fuse them with an adult theme (life in sub-urbia), and present on television the first adult cartoon series. The result was the trials and tribulations of Fred and Wilma Flintstone along with their neighbors, Betty and Barney Rubble in Bedrock, U.S.A. A curious twist is that though this program was designed for adults, it has become a tremendous favorite with children. It is truly a family program. THE CREATORS BILL HANNA was born in Melrose, New Mexico, and started out in life as a structural engineer, but soon switched to writing for a cartooning company in California. JOE BARBERA was an accountant in his native New York City until he sold his first cartoon to Collier's.Spurred by this success, he began to devote his full time to a career as a sketch artist. In 1937, both men joined MGM, and soon began to work together. Their efforts resulted in "Tom and Jerry", a cartoon series which was to win them fame and seven Academy Awards, As Hanna Barbera Productions, they began to make cartoons specifically for television. Their first entry was "Ruff N' Reddy", This was followed by the renowned "Huckleberry Hound", "Quick Draw McGraw',"Yogi Bear", and now "The Flintstones."
