Small Antique Mat/Rug, "Quebec", Snow Scene, Grenfell Style, 10.25"X13.5"

Description: Antique/Vintage Hooked Mat/Rug, “Quebec”, Snow Scene with Houses and People, Grenfell Style, 10.25”X13.5” This small vintage hooked mat/rug shows a snow scene with two houses (or one large house) in the woods and two people (children?) in the front yard; the word "Quebec" appears on the bottom. The front side is faded; the back is much more colorful, as is often the case, since it was not exposed to the sun. The colors seen on the back include the blue of the sky, the yellow of one house and the brown of the other house (with a blue door), the brown tree trunk, the green evergreen trees on both sides, the two people in the front in green clothes, and the white of the snow covered ground. The materials appear to be cotton hooked on burlap (jute?) substrate; the piece measures 10.25"X13.5". I am not sure if this mat is Grenfell since the stitches don't appear to be as uniform (in a column) as those that came out of the Grenfell Mission. But the design is certainly the same as those you see from Grenfell; the winter scene matches a lot of the work coming out of that part of the world (Canada) including the Tremblay rugs. The item is in good condition with only a few stitches coming loose and no rips or missing pieces; the substrate is still securely attached to the hooked front with the original hand stitching. The mat is faded as is often the case with pieces of this age (1900-1930), and it could use a good cleaning since it is in as found, original condition. This vintage hooked piece has been a part of my personal collection for the past 25 years; I have had it displayed in my non-smoking home under a table where it was never walked on.
