Description: New, 2023 harvest! Heimia salicifolia is a perennial shrub of the Loosestrife family native to Mexico and tropical regions of central and south America. Known as Sinicuiche, the Mexican “magical drink causing oblivion”, it has been used by the natives of Central America and Mexico for shamanic purposes for centuries. The traditional preparation involves soaking the leaves and flowers in water and setting in the sun for 24 hours to allow to ferment slightly, which is purported to suffuse the knowledge and power of the sun into the liquid. The not unpleasant-tasting drink has the effect of general relaxation, euphoria, acoustic hallucinations, yellowing of the vision, and visual and space/time effects. An interesting effect of Sinicuichi appears to be on memory.. shamans hold the plant to be sacred and endowed with supernatural powers, as it helps them vividly relive events of many years earlier as if they were happening in the present, and apparently even permits them even to recall pre-natal memories. However, extended use has been reported to cause a gross forgetfulness of present circumstances. In Mexican folk medicine, Sinicuiche is also used for female fertility, and to counteract the “evil eye”. The primary psychoactive component of Sinicuiche is vertine, a quinolizidine alkaloid known to have anticholinergic and antispasmodic properties. Heimia salicifolia is a perennial shrub with numerous small dark green leaves, and, when the sun is shining strong, dozens of tiny bright yellow flowers. It can grow to over 4 feet in height, with just as large a circumference. Plants prefer partial shade and well drained soil. The above ground parts are frost-sensitive but will resprout from the base every spring if temperatures are kept above 20 degrees F. Leaves, flowers, and tips are harvested in late summer when in the height of flowering and slowly dried to preserve constituents. Make a tea out of the dried herbage or produce a traditional sun-brew: infuse 10 g of herbage in 3 cups water and let sit in the sun for 24 hours. *These statements and product have not been evaluated by the FDA.
