Description: Handmade in the USAPope Pius XI Single Decade Rosary This single decade rosary has a 1" diameter vintage silver-toned medal with the image of Pope Pius XI on the front. On the reverse of the medal is a scene of the famous grotto in Lourdes with Mass being offered. There is Latin around the border of the medal on the front which refers to a Jubilee of the Redemption April 25-28 1935 - I'm not certain of all the words. On the reverse is more Latin but it's hard to make out all the letters - they are not very worn but the letter styling is odd. I think it refers to the three days jubilee at Lourdes. 1935 would have been 77 years after the apparitions at Lourdes. This medal is very old and definitely has some wear and tarnish and was most likely made in Italy about 70 years ago. Because the medal is rare and an antique I had to pay quite a bit more for it so the price of this chaplet reflects that. The medal is a fascinating piece of history for anyone interested in the popes especially of recent (20th century) and sacred tradition. It's really quite a shame that this able Pope is not being considered as a future saint. Only Pope for about 7 years, he was an able theologian who possessed three doctorates and was fluent in several languages. With the help of his Secretary of State (the future Venerable Pius XII) he created Vatican City and its independence from Italy. He was the first pope to use radio and established the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. He wrote papers criticizing Mussolini, Fascism, Nazism, Communism, Atheism and liberal Capitalism. Considered authoritarian and a bit aloof in nature, he was still a pope ahead of his time, recognized the dangers ahead for the Church especially with the rise of Atheistic Communism, and many of his opinions were later shared by Pope John Paul II and others. Maybe someday he will be considered a saint! All eleven 8 mm beads are smooth, round, natural, genuine semi-precious gemstones. The single Our Father is an Amethyst and the ten Hail Mary beads are Blue Adventurine. The 1-3/4" silver-toned San Damiano crucifix has half of the prayer of peace by St Francis on the back - in English. (We include a card with the whole prayer plus info on the crucifix.)
