He studied at the Vienna Academy with Christian Griepenkerl and Franz Rumpler and in between 1900 at the Academy in Karlsruhe with Ludwig Schmid-Reutte. Study trips took him through Germany and Italy. In 1909 he became a member of the Vienna Künstlerhaus. Windhager worked as a painter and illustrator (e.g. Grillparzer, Der arme Spielmann, 1913). During the First World War, Windhager was artistically active as a war painter in the Russian and Italian theater of war. In the post-war period, Windhager continued to work in Vienna and painted, among other works, architectural views. He was also known for his colorful genre paintings. He also worked under the name Franz Reichar(d)t or Franz Reichardt-Windhager. Aus dem Nachlass des österr. Künstlers Prof. Franz Windhager, Franz Windhager (* 3. Dezember 1879 in Wien; † 14.
