Description: "The Yorktown Sesquicentennial 1931 - Proceedings of the United States Yorktown Sesquicentennial Commission in connection with the Celebration of the Siege of Yorktown, 1971"; United States Government Printing Office, 1931; 382 pp. Illustrated with photos and with three large foldouts. Very good condition, pages like new; binding loose, repaired using archival mending tape; corners bumped, some fraying of book edges. Inscribed by Texas Congressman Joe Henry Eagle (1870-1963), who served 1913-21, and again 1933-37. He also ran unsuccessfully for the Senate. Eagle's inscription is to Mrs C H Milby (d.1941), daughter of John Grant Todd (1808-1877), who served as Commodore in the Navy of the Texas Republic (1836-46) and delivered official notification of Texas' annexation from the US Congress to the last President of the Texas Republic Anson Jones (1798-1858)! Todd also was one of the founders of Texas' first railroad the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado. Mrs. Milby's husband was noted Texas entrepreneur Charles H Milby (1852-1925), active in brickyards, coal ventures, real estate, and banking. He built the Milby Hotel (1910-71) and was part of the original committee that proposed Houston as a site for a deep water port. The C H Milby High School and Milby Park in Houston were named in his honor. See photo of the Milby House (demolished 1959 - featured in the book "Houston's Forgotten Heritage"). This book's inscription has an illustrious pedigree. Called "...the most ambitious special event ever held in a National Park Service area..." (National Parks Traveler, October 19, 2009), this monumental four day event commemorating the Siege of Yorktown in 1791, took place on a site that had few accommodations, no sewage or running water, no nearby rail service, a dilapidated wharf, and was suffering, like the entire country, from the effects of the Great Depression. The results of the year long construction efforts are described in this volume (along with the history of the Siege of Yorktown) - one of the greatest government produced spectacles in US history. A rare and important historical document with an equally historic inscription. please visit my ebay sites: Art https://www.ebay.com/str/rufus1226 Records www.ebay.com/usr/juledefelice_0 Books www.ebay.com/usr/j18-jule www.ebay.com/usr/judefe-65 https://www.ebay.com/usr/judefe16
