Description: Antique Book about the sinking of the sailing vessel "Dryade". A scarce, maybe unique, privately printed journal. NOW POSSIBLY THE ONLY COPY IN THE WORLD. It is also possible that only one book was published by the author to a sister. Written by a survivor of the sinking of the Dryade off the coast of Madagascar as a series of letters to a sister. Wikipedia records the following in its “Lists of Shipwrecks” for March1841.“The ship departed from Mauritius for London on 24 February 1841. Initially reported as no further trace, presumed foundered with the loss of all hands. She had developed a leak on 28 February and soon after crew and passengers abandoned her at sea. They reached Madagascar in her boats.” Published by JNO Hatchard & Sons, Picadilly, Effingham Wilson, Bishopsgate Within, London and D Marples, Meville Chambers, Liverpool, England. There is no listing of the printing of this book in the archives of Hatchard, possible because the book was self published by the author. The printer is T.M.Allgood, Worster, England. The ship's master during that voyage was Captain R. Heard. The dedication is to a Mary Waddell, in a beautiful copperplate handwriting on the fly leaf, by H. Heard – probably a relative and maybe the author? Interestingly on the inside front cover is a sticker of “The Grange” at Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia which was the home of G&N Ingleton. Geoffrey Chapman Ingleton was born in Bairnsdale, Victoria, and at the age of 13 entered the Royal Australian Naval College. After being commissioned as a lieutenant, he was assigned to the hydrographic service and served in H.M.A.S. Moresby surveying waters to the north of Australia. Ingleton is best remembered through his many writings as a historian of early Australia. He was a passionate collector of books and manuscripts. Most of his library was sold by the Sydney auctioneers Lawsons in a series of sales throughout the 1990s. So it is most likely that at sometime this book passed through his hands. As the journal is 181 years old it shows wear, but is still well bound with its pages edge gilding still intact. See photographs for its condition. Footnote “Dryade was launched at Bristol in 1825. She traded between England and Peru, the Indian Ocean, and then spent most of her career trading between England and New South Wales. Her crew and passengers abandoned her circa March 1841 when she developed a leak while sailing from Mauritius to London”. source Wikipedia Journal will be dispatched via registered post.
