Note Includes the largest bibliography ever compiled on art and camouflage (not only ship camouflage), comprised of 40 pages. Book Contents This is a collection of twenty-six all but unknown writings about World War I ship camouflage, published during and after the war. These were written by a wide assortment of authors, including the camouflage artists themselves. These writings are supplemented in the margins by brief eyewitness observations from the same time period, and rare historic photographs, diagrams, and news clippings. This is an unparalleled research collection. Many of the articles are about “high difference” or disruptive camouflage, a counter-intuitive method in which ships were painted in brightly colored abstract patterns, which made them conspicuous but hard to target accurately. This practice captured the imagination of the wartime public. This approach to ship camouflage became known by such names as “dazzle camouflage,” “baffle painting,” “jazz painting“ and “parti-coloring.” In publications at the time, it was frequently compared to Modern-era styles of art, such as cubism, futurism, vorticism and surrealism. Wartime news articles claimed that disruptively-painted ships looked like crazy quilts, “sea-going Easter eggs,” barber poles, painted Jezebels—and even, the delirium tremens. Did this approach to camouflage actually work? It is often assumed that it did not, because of the lack of rigorous testing of its effectiveness at the time. But among the documents in this book is an account of postwar laboratory experiments at MIT that suggest that not only did it work, it may have worked far better than anyone expected. Comments “…there is no better source for information than artist, designer, historian, and teacher Roy R. Behrens. His website [Camoupedia] is a well-organized visual treat with links to lots of additional sources of information about camouflage, including Behrens’ own books on the topic.” —Chris Barton, Dazzle Ships: World War I and the Art of Confusion. “Behrens’ Camoupedia blog is now the most important online resource for anyone interested in the subject of camouflage…” —James Taylor, Dazzle: Disguise and Disruption in War. “[Behrens] is one of the most original thinkers involved in design, particularly printed communications, anywhere around. He thinks and writes about subjects tangential to design with amazing insight and wit.” —Dugald Stermer, Communication Arts magazine. “[Roy Behrens] is a rare example of the graphic artist who is also wonderfully skilled as a writer. His sentences are hale and athletic, alive with sense and excitement, and go about their business with an admirable briskness…Such brave forthrightness is rare in discursive writing.” —Guy Davenport. Author Until his retirement from teaching in 2018, Emeritus Professor Roy R. Behrens was Professor of Art and Distinguished Scholar at the University of Northern Iowa. He had taught graphic design and design history at that and other schools for more than 45 years. He is the author of seven books, and literally hundreds of articles in journals, books, and magazines, and has appeared in broadcast interviews on NOVA, National Public Radio, Australian Public Radio, BBC, and Iowa Public Television, as well as in documentary films. He has been a nominee for the Smithsonian Institution's National Design Awards, has received the Iowa Board of Regents Faculty Excellence Award, and has been described in Communication Arts magazine as "one of the most original thinkers in design." He has lectured throughout the US, and, internationally, in the UK, Canada, and Australia. More information and a wide selection of his work (links to his publications, exhibits, and videos) can be accessed at his art and camouflage blog at Camoupedia(dot)blogspot, as well as at his website at www(dot)bobolinkbooks(dot)com/BALLAST/. He is especially known for his books and other writings on camouflage, including Art and Camouflage: Concealment and Deception in Nature, Art and War (1981); False Colors: Art, Design and Modern Camouflage (2002) https://www.ebay.com/itm/294588527246; and Camoupedia: A Compendium of Research on Art, Architecture and Camouflage (2009) https://www.ebay.com/itm/294588567451.
