Description: Two rare original antique engraving prints from an 1860s illustrated journal. You are bidding on two prints. The first shows the new factory of Sevres Porcelain in St. Cloud, France. The second shows the Ceramics Museum included in the complex. On the back of this antique print is an article on Sèvres porcelain. The Manufacture nationale de Sevres is one of the principal European porcelain manufactories. It is located in Sevres, Hauts-de-Seine, France. It is the continuation of Vincennes porcelain, founded in 1740, which moved to Sevres in 1756. It has been owned by the French crown or government since 1759, and has always maintained the highest standards of quality. Almost immediately, it replaced Meissen porcelain as the standard-setter among European porcelain factories, retaining this position until at least the 19th century. Sèvres is a particularly documentary factory in this respect, as painters and gilders were allowed to add their ‘mark’ on pieces they worked on in order to identify themselves. Many of these painters and the pieces they worked on are noted in factory records (now held in the archives at Sèvres) and are therefore identifiable. The prints are very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills most of it, measuring about 9 x 13 inches, with a caption below it.
