Description: These glasses were last owned by my late sister and, since she and I grew up in the period and region Anchor Hocking was making them (1950s; Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio), it's possible these were in the family and I never noticed them. More likely, she found them in this pristine condition at the barn sales she regularly attended around Pittsburgh (our hometown) and simply preserved them. Like so many other famous glassmakers, Anchor Hocking was an Ohio phenomenon. Isaac Collins and friends bought the Lancaster Carbon Company of Lancaster, Ohio in 1905 and re-named it the Hocking Glass Company for the Hocking River which ran nearby. It was immediately successful, selling $20,000 in glassware in its first year. It absorbed other regional glassmakers and, perhaps more importantly, developed a machine that cut costs and increased production just as the Depression was destroying other companies. Hocking Glass became Anchor Hocking Glass Corporation on the last day of 1937 when it merged with the Anchor Cap and Closure Corporation which had plants from Long Island, NY to Toronto, Canada to Pennsylvania. It also created the logo on the bottom of these blue iris juice glasses that was used from 1938-1967. Anchor Hocking expanded into tableware, toiletries, and cosmetic containers and with new locations from Florida to Texas to California, as well as expanding in Ohio. In 1968, when it introduced a new logo, Anchor Hocking expanded mightily from glass to plastics and continued to do so until 1987 when its many franchises were purchased by the Newell Corporation. Some were strengthened, many were closed or sold. Though it's a bit unclear, Anchor Hocking is still manufacturing today under some corporate head, and still claims Ohio as its home. The glasses themselves have a wonderful art nouveau style, with blossoming irises that begin with a dark green set of leaves that turn to a light green stem to a rich purple set of bottom iris leaves before the final light purple blossoms. The glasses are thin and light, keeping with that floral delicacy. I think you'd love them! Thanks for visiting!Rick
