Description: 1950 SignedSelf-TypedLetterby Hubert HumphreytoMinnesota State RepresentativeD.D. Wozniak We acquired this letter from a scrapbook kept by former State of Minnesota Representative D. D. Wozniak (1922-2005). The scrapbook was purchased by us a few years ago at an estate sale held by Wozniak's family. Wozniak was elected first in 1950 to serve what was the beginning of his first term in1951. He was re-elected and ultimately served 14 years, from 1951 through 1965. Wozniak's election was on November 7, 1950. Humphrey's letter to him is dated slightly over a month later, a speedy response to his election by Washington D.C. time. The swift reply and the letter's content show the irrepressible spirit and energy that eventually put Humphrey in a position to vie for the highest positions in the government. Also impressive, the letter shows a warmth and interest in others that often was left by the wayside when other politicians with Humphrey's ambition, but lacking his talent and empathy, attempted to get ahead in Washington. This is an authentic document. It is straight out of Wozniak's scrapbook; both Humphrey and Wozniak began their Washington careers about the same time. This document is apparently a self-typed letter that has been signed by hand, not by an automatic letter-signer. There is no indication by initials at the bottom left of the page that the item was typed by someone else. Had a secretary typed it, most likely Wozniak's name would not have been misspelled in the address. The partial name in the signature shows Humphrey's warmth, and the contained writing is less flamboyant than an autograph but more fitting for a letter. In addition, the signature shows signs of varying pressure and ink that machine signatures do not have. The letter is on Senate letterhead showing Humphrey served on the Committee on" Post Office and Civil Service." It is 8" x 10.5." There is some residue of scrapbook paper on the back from the page to which it was glued. The typing appears to be a bit faded and the edges are very slightly yellowed. It is fortunate this piece was in a scrapbook; it may have saved the letter from further deterioration. We have done two scans of the letter (above) in the event you wish more visual information than one scan would give.
