Description: This book is a collection of articles presented by participants in the work of the international Research Group on Living Semitic Languages and Comparative Semitic Linguistics that was active in Jerusalem at the Hebrew University Institute for Advanced Studies during the academic year of 1990-1991. Members of the group mostly pursued their individual research, but met in a weekly seminar, together with other scholars from Israel and from abroad, for the presentation of papers and subsequent discussion (see p. 196). We specially appreciate the great opportunity that we had in having with us in the Institute our eminent teacher Professor H. J. P J. Polotsky, who was a member of the group and took active part in our meetings until shortly before his lamentable death on the 10th of August 1991. One of Polotsky's lectures in the seminar is included in the present volume (pp. 90-102) as reproduced from the recording made at the time, and the whole book is dedicated to his memory. To the Institute for Advanced Studies and its staff, and mainly to Professor M. Yaari, the then Director of the Institute, Dr Elisheva Yaron, the Associate Director, and Ms Dalia Aviely, a senior secretary, we are indebted and grateful for the efficient and amiable support offered throughout to our group. Our special heartfelt thanks due are to Ms Rama Friedlander for her warm attitude and friendly readiness to help at all times; we are particularly obliged to her for taking upon herself, with her great expertise in everything connected with desktop typesetting, the most difficult part of the preparation of the present volume. The present director of the Institute, Professor D. Shulman, has kindly given his approval for the book to be published under the auspices of the Institute for Advanced Studies. The articles in this volume are not intended to cover any part or aspect of Semitic or Cushitic, neither do they represent the scope of linguistic research of their writers, but they include various studies typological, synchronic or historical- whether special or general, comparative or of different problems of phonetics, root structure, word formation, syntax, lexicology or dialectolgy, in discussing some specific points of Arabic and South-Arabian, Syriac and Neo-Aramaic, Biblical and Modern Hebrew, Semitic and Cushitic languages of Ethiopia. We hope that the book will be of interest to specialists, Semitists, Cushitists, and linguists in general. Jerusalem, June 1993 The Editors
