Description: Segmenta nobilium signorum statuarum, Francois Perrier (1638 Paris) First First. Classic folio, nearly 400 years old, cited many times in reference for 17thand 18th century artist and engravers of the French classic period. Collection (folio) of engraved copperplates by Francois Perrier (1590-1656) of classic Roman statuary. Rare in presumed first state, with what appears as a firmer rebinding from the 18th century (mid- to late 1700's), and a quite fine condition of interior plates. A definite museum collection acquisition candidate. Previously auctioned at Sotheby's in December, 1912, from the collection of Andrew Lang with label present. Published: Paris/Romae : [s.n.] M.D.C.XXXVIII"Romae superiorum permissu Cum privilegio fummi Pontificus."(of the superior(s) permission in Rome with the privilege of the Pope). In Rome, although the atelier of Perrier in Paris was also likely, if not entirely significant in the production of the folio corpus– the 100 copperplate engravings which comprise the body of work. Per the colophon on the title page engraving: "Paris : Chez la veufve de deffunct Perier, rue des fossez St. Germain vis a vis l'Hotel de Sourdy." Full colophon (engraved) in Latin reads:Ill[ustrissi]mo. D. D. Segmenta nobilium signorum e statuarú : quæ temporis dentem inuidium euasere vrbis æternæ ruinis erepta typis æneis ab se commissa perpetuæ uenerationis monumentum / Engraved title with dedication and title as above; 100 engraved plates without letterpress; two leaves of index engraved. Another characteristic of the attributed first printing, plates are sequentially numbered in correct order, from #1-100 and all plates are signed 'F.P.' Has first state title variation: the first plate "Laocoon" (foliated in bottom right hand corner) has "Franciscus Perrier Burgund. delin. et sculp. Romae superior. licentia 1638."(cf. Robert-Dumesnil.) Engraved t.p. (also referred to as the frontispiece) impression 24 x 15.5; other plate marks vary somewhat according to shape of sculpture depicted. The two folded plates are ca. 24 x 38 cm. and 32 x 25 cm. Brunet cites a differing title with the same date: Icones et segmenta nobilium signorum et statuarum quæ Romæ extant, delineata atque in ære inciso anno 1638;but this example has the latin permission from the "Pontificus". Hardcover. Burnished and embossed leather, perhaps originally colored.Spine is tight and signatures are patent. Leather is worn, cracked, withsome areas deskinned. Some parts of the spine are separated from cover flats, but endpapers still hold well. Cover has been archival conservedtp prevent further cracking/abrading, but has not been restored. Whomever did the conservation on the outside cover did a nice job.Corners are worn and rounded to substrate, as some part of edges.Original leather ties are present. Covers are quite aged and worn, buthave good structural integrity. Endpapers are also aged, foxed, withnoticeable wear; but integrated with boards well. Small strips of someearly paper tape repair are present, but best left to museum conservator.Creases, slight folds, slight humidity warping of edges are present. Many pages have spine anchors, where the litho has been married to the spine undoubtedly at the time of the early rebinding. There is random spotting, especially on endpapers, but lithoareas are for the most part free of these defects.Lays quite flat with little bending. Pastedown with Sotheby's sticker on recto. "From the library of Andrew Lang, Sold at Sotheby's Dec. 5th and 6th, 1912."Plates in body of book are in very nice condition; but noticeable foxing, especially at edges/folds, some slight edge tears on many, but cream to off-white. Brown spots and occasional black dotting, especially on the endpapers; but these are by far the worst areas.Illustration areas (within the plates) are in general, beautiful and unmarred.Ink is dark and crisp with little perceptible fading. They are in incredible state considering their nearly 400 year old journey. Overall, a quite excellent example of an early Perrier engravings folio. About Francois Perrier.François Perrier (1590–1650) was a French painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Perrier was instrumental in introducing into France the grand style of the decorative painters of the Roman Baroque.[1] He is also remembered for his two collections of prints after antique sculptures, the Segmenta nobilium signorum et statuarum quae temporis dentem invidium evasere (Paris, 1638), and Icones et segmenta...quae Romae adhuc extant (Paris, 1645). These prints provided visual repertories of classical models for generations of European artists and connoisseurs. Perrier was born in Pontarlier. During the years 1620–1625, he resided in Rome, where he took as his model the practitioner of academic Baroque classicism, Giovanni Lanfranco. when he was employed on the fresco decoration of the dome of S Andrea della Valle, one of the earliest examples of Roman Baroque ceiling decoration. On his return to France, following a brief stay in Lyon he settled in Paris in 1630. Here he worked in the classicising circle of Simon Vouet. In 1632–1634, he had as his pupil Charles Le Brun, who would become a central figure of official French painting in the age of Louis XIV. Perrier returned to Rome in 1635, remaining there for the next decade. During this period he created decorations for palazzo Peretti and saw to the publication in Paris of his great repertory of images.
