Directed by Michael Corrente, written by David Mamet. Brief synopsis, via IMDb: Long-repressed feelings of bitterness and betrayal explode when three inner-city losers plot the robbery of a valuable coin in a seedy second-hand junk shop. American Buffalo is an example of David Mamet's ear for dialogue and his way with the gritty underbelly of society. Perhaps no other movie has so deftly demonstrated Mamet's unique sense of rhythm in spoken language. The movie is engrossing and entertaining, all the while using only one location and three characters. Dustin Hoffman is revoltingly slimy as Teach, and Dennis Franz perfects the conflicted role of Don that he originated on stage many years ago. A must-see for any fan of Mamet or student of the human condition. Summary from the DVD case's back cover: Two-time Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman and two-time Emmy winner Dennis Franz ("NYPD Blue") deliver tour-de-force performances as volatile small-time hustlers in this edgy, electrifying story of trust, betrayal, and loyalty gone dangerously awry. American Buffalo is a riveting study in human virtue and vulnerability from Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Mamet (Wag the Dog, The Edge, The Untouchables) and director Michael Corrente. For down-and-out junk dealer Don (Franz), life goes from unlucky to unbearable when he discovers that the rare, buffalo head nickel he just sold for $90 is worth ten times as much! Refusing to let himself be out-swindled, Don enlists the help of a young protégé (Sean Nelson) in a scheme to steal the coin back. But their plans are suddenly altered by the intrusion of Teach (Hoffman), a disturbingly aggressive would-be thief who badgers Don into cutting him in on the heist - a decision that carries explosive consequences for everyone involved. Some film trivia and background, via IMDb: The film, like the stage play, is what is known in theatre as a "three-hander", and has a cast of only three people. The building in which the movie was filmed was demolished along with several others in 1997, to make room for a pharmacy and fast food store. The play was first performed and originally opened at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Illinois on November 23, 1975. Bernard Erhard played Teach, J.J. Johnston played Don, and William H. Macy played Bobby. Al Pacino also played Teach on Broadway between 1981-1984. Robert Duvall played the role of Walter "Teach" Cole on Broadway in 1984, and was a more intense performance than that of Al Pacino's. Dennis Franz was starring on NYPD Blue (1993) when he agreed to take the role of Don in this film. This movie was shot during his summer hiatus from the show. The play was originally set in Chicago, Illinois, as per David Mamet's favorite city. The film was relocated to Pawtucket, Rhode Island, giving the film a more industrial feel, along with more dirt and grime. In the play, Bobby was a junkie. Due to Sean Nelson's age, it was only implied in the film very briefly by Teach during his conversation with Donny about the planned robbery that night. The character that Don and Bobby originally plan to rob is never seen in the film at any point. This movie was originally slated to be released in late 1994 according to Entertainment Weekly's Fall Preview Issue. This movie was pushed back for release in 1995, and again appeared in that magazine's Fall Preview issue for films being released during the Fall and Winter seasons. This movie was finally released in September 1996, after Samuel Goldwyn Films picked up the distribution rights, and also appeared once again in Entertainment Weekly's Fall Preview Issue. Sean Nelson was cast due to his strong performance in Fresh (1994). Dennis Franz had just gotten married when this film was offered to him, and had skipped his honeymoon to make this film. Franz won two Emmys for NYPD Blue (1993) before this film was released. The point of this movie was that the nickel was practically worthless, but everything else that Donny had in his junk shop was more valuable than the coin. The characters of Donny and Teach are practically too stupid to comprehend this fact, and philosophize about being a great businessman, in regards to Donny. Thank you for your interest.
