About Leopard Seals Most species of seal can be found in Arctic regions, although the leopard seal (Hydrurga leptonyx) is found at the South Pole (the continent of Antarctica). they are also found in the colder waters near Australia and New Zealand along with a few other islands in the southern hemisphere. The leopard seal is the second largest seal in Antarctica, with the southern elephant seal being more larger. These marine mammals have hair or fur and a thick layer of fat, called blubber, which protects them from the bitter cold, harsh weather and icy waters. Unlike sea lions, true seals don't have visible ears. The small holes that lead to the ear close, as do their noses, when the seal is underwater, yet they can hear just as well in the water as out. Their large, round eyes provide excellent vision both under and above water. Their coarse, sensitive whiskers are continuously growing. In murky waters these whiskers are used to detect fish by sweeping the upper lip back and forth. While seals generally stay underwater only a couple of minutes and do not dive very deep, some seals, when hunting, can stay under for as long as 30 minutes and dive as deep as 1,000 feet. Although they spend most of their time in the water, they do come onto the ice or rocky outcroppings to bask in the sun, especially during mating season. There are 17 seal species ranging in size from 4 feet long and 140 pounds to 20 feet long and 4 tons. Leopard seals weigh between 440 and 1,320 pounds and reach a length of about 8 to 11 feet. Leopard seals are voracious predators, feeding on penguins, krill, fish, and other seals. On the other hand, leopard seals need to stay out of the way of hungry orcas.
