Description: 1977 unframed Middle Eastern ‘Contemporary Art’ watercolor painting on Bainbridge Board, “Bedouin Man”, by renowned Saudi Arabia female painter Meher Raheem. She was active during 4 decades in Saudi Arabia, from 1958-1985.Meher Raheem is a listed artist. See Worthpoint, Invaluable, etc. Her and her artist-husband, Raheem Baig, were leaders in the art community of the Kingdom Of Saudi Arabia. They were both Members of the Dhahran Art Group, the Ras Tanura Art Group, and the Abqaiq Art Group, all in Saudi Arabia. Westerners might call Meher’s style Orientalist, but she was a Realist and a very accomplished one.Mr. Baig came to Saudi Arabia in 1950. He worked as a graphic artist for the Arabian American Oil Company, Aramco. By 1964, he and his artist-wife Meher Raheem, who’d arrived in 1958, were living in Khobar in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia with their three children. That’s in the Dammam metropolitan area. Mr. Baig worked in Dhahran.Meher Raheem was originally from Pakistan. The name ‘Pakistan’ was introduced in 1933 and people went through a lot in the process, but Pakistan became independent from India in 1947. In 1956, Pakistan declared themselves an Islamic republic. On a map, it looks like Pakistan is in what I’d call West Asia (and some people would call Central Asia), but for some reason it’s referred to as being in South Asia. The Brits probably made all this up. In any event, most people in both Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are Sunni Muslims.I don’t specifically know the genealogy of Meher or Mr. Baig, but her name is Islamic and his surname is said to trace back to the Ottoman Turks. I posted photos of the Baigs that I found on the net. Meher was a very pretty lady. While Meher Raheem seems to have had taken her husband’s first name as her surname (last name), no one has ever discussed her name before marriage…Raheem Baig (1930-2003) was Mirza Abdul (M.A.) Raheem Baig. He became a US citizen and his resting place is Forest Lawn Cemetery, Houston, Texas. When looking on the Billion Graves site, the next headstone after his that’s pictured (and has the same design / decoration on it) is that of Sumdani Meher Bano (1938-2007). The graves are marked “Our Beloved Father” and “Our Beloved Mother”.Per a recent article in Arab News, “‘Buy what you love and love what you buy’: Young buyers drive Saudi art market”, Sotheby’s chairmain for the Middle East and India, Edward Gibbs, noted that Saudi artists are becoming better known for their work, both within the Kingdom and around the world. It’s an emerging market that includes women such as Saudi-Palestinian artist Dana Awartani.Watercolor on Bainbridge Board.Signed and dated lower right, “MEHER RAHEEM ‘77”.
