PINGREE - CIVIL APPOINTMENT SIGNED 11/29/1884 - HFSID 32799 SAMUEL E. PINGREE Rare signature from the Vermont Governor on the civil appointment of Frank D. Hall to State Attorney, dated 1884 Civil appointment signed: "Samuel E. Pingree", "Alfred E. Watson", 10½x16. Encapsulated to size of 11½x17. November 29, 1884. Montpelier, Vermont. In part: "To Frank D. Hall, Esq., Greeting. You, having been duly elected Sate's Attorney, within and for the County of Essex are, by these presents, fully authorized and empowered to exercise the duties of said office, within said County, for two years, commencing on the first day of December...". Samuel E. Pingree (1832-1922) served as the 40th Governor of Vermont from 1884 to 1886. Educated as a lawyer, Pingree was one of the many who enlisted into the army during the Civil War, being chosen as 1st Lieutenant of the Union Company F, 3rd Vermont Infantry. He was severely wounded at the Battle at Lee's Mills, being hospitalized for ten weeks to recover. During the Battle of the Wilderness, Pingree was placed in command of the 2nd Vermont Infantry when it was discovered that all the field officers of the unit were either wounded or dead. He was mustered out in 1864, and years later in 1891, received a Medal of Honor for his actions during the Battle at Lee's Mills. Postwar, Pingree began pursuing politics, being elected lieutenant governor before his election as governor. Serving only one short term, Pingree accomplished more after leaving office, fronting several commissions and organizations. Multiple folds. Creased throughout, esp. at right margin.
