Description: It was long recognized in big game hunting circles that a recording depository was needed to identify quality trophy animals and that existing record books did not cover many of the world's big game species. No publication had listed game animals from Asia since 1935! Heavy emphasis on opening many new hunting areas since World War II in such countries as Iran, Afghanistan, Mongolia and Russia made even greater the need for developing such a text. Until SCI undertook leadership in this endeavor, only African and North American animals were covered in existing record texts. No adequate coverage existed for European game, exotics or animals from South America, Australia or New Zealand. No adequate scoring methodology existed that would permit accurate comparisons in judging the quality of a trophy. In 1977, SCI worked on developing a scoring method covering every game animal from every continent. The method in some cases coincided with other existing sys-tems; in other cases, totally new methodology was devel-oped. The intent was never to compare an apple with an orange, or one system with another, but rather that we would compare and judge applies within our own system. Since its first publication, some revisions have been made and some clarifications have been issued; the scoring system has built-in flexibility if a need should arise for adjustments. As the recording system enlarges, some minimums were raised so a true trophy will maintain recognition for its qualities of excellence. Others were lowered if, in the judgement of the Committee, the initial standards were too high. This was only ascertained when we had examined the entries submitted by our membership. After the enthusiastic response to Edition I of the SCI Record Book of Trophy Animals, the Committee also recognized a need to refine some standards. As a consequence, some minor changes on scoring methodology were agreed upon. These have now been incorporated as the standard
