Description: Sabal maritima is a native of Cuba and Jamaica, and is another one of these massive-trunked Sabals like S. causiarum and S. domingensis (some think that those 3 palms are actually just variations of the same species). Growing to about 50 feet tall, one defining characteristic that sets this Sabal apart from its large cousins is the white to tan scales found on the undersides of the petioles (especially younger petioles). The Bull Thatch Palm also is fairly cold hardy, like many Sabals are, easily enduring temperatures down into the low 20sF. The one in my pictures is in Gainesville, FL (zone 8b/9a).
