Description: The Yakima Valley was the first American Viticulturally Area established within Washington state, gaining the recognition in 1983. Part of the larger Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley is home to more than 18, 000 acres of vineyards, giving the area the largest concentration of wineries and vineyards in the state. In addition to grapes, the Valley is also home to fruit orchards growing apple, cherries, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums. The area is also home to nearly 80% of the US hop production. In the 1800s, Henry Pinchwell plants what is probably the first commercial orchard in Yakima Valley. The orchard, planted on property belonging to J.F. McCurdy, consists of five acres of prune and peach trees. Euro-American settlement in the Yakima Valley began in the late 1850s and early settlers sometimes planted orchards for personal use. It was not until irrigation projects took hole in the 1870s that orchard planting began in earnest. The arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1885 provided convenient, dependable transportation of crops to market. When irrigated, the easily tilled volcanic-ash soil deposited in the region was ideal for growing fruit, especially apples. The warm sunny days and cool nights, combined with nutrients in the soil was perfect for the growth of apples and other fruits. By 1900, 200 boxcar-loads of fruit were being shipped from the Yakima Valley each year. historylink. This is a beautiful Real Photo Card of what could be Apple or Cherry Trees in bloom.
