Description: Alonzo Cudworth’s portrait hangs on the wall inside the office of his namesake American Legion Post. Along with Everhart Van Eimeren, he was killed in World War I. In the spring of 1917, Cudworth and Van Eimeren were among the first from southeastern Wisconsin to join the army. They shipped out to France together and they both died August 29, 1918 and buried a few feet from where they fell. Neither saw their 21st birthday. In 1921, their bodies were returned to the families and members of their Legion Posts would escort them to separate cemeteries. A legion post in South Milwaukee was named after Van Eimeren and Cudworth Post 23 was housed in a mansion on Milwaukee’s east side. Both posts were both founded in 1919. The Cudworth post burnt down and another was built in the same block of Prospect Ave but was sold two decades ago. At its peak in the 1980s, the Cudworth post had more than 5,000 members including Gen. Douglas MacArthur and Billy Mitchell. This is an “L.L. Cook” real photo of the Cudworth’s Post in Milwuakee, Wisconsin. It is not postmarked but was published after 1950 and is in good condition. The is minor wear on the corners and edges and the image is light but clean and clear. The reverse is clean. The colors on the images are a more neutral B&W than the scanUnless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
