Description: ROYAL STAFFORDSHIRE OLD PEKIN PORCELAIN COVERED SUGAR BOWL Floral Transferware Ironstone A vintage covered sugar bowl made of ironstone from the Old Pekin line from Royal Staffordshire of England. Set your tea or coffee service apart from the rest with this lovely covered sugar bowl from Royal Staffordshire. This English company continues its tradition of porcelain excellence with this sugar bowl from the Old Pekin collection. The bowl has a removable lid, lovely octagon construction, and brown on white floral patterns with handles on either side. Ironstone is used as a component in some ceramics, commonly known as "ironstone china". Josiah Wedgwood also manufactured a "stoneware" china in the 19th century. It was commonly used for heavy-duty dinner services in the 19th century. Charles James Mason (son of the potter Miles Mason) took out a patent for "Mason's Ironstone China" in 1813. Ironstone china was very popular during the 1970s. With the top, this ironstone piece is 4 1/2 inches tall with a base 3 inches in diameter. It weighs 13 ounces. This item is in very good condition. Its floral decoration is bold and vibrant, and there appears to be no cracks, chips, or crazing. The only issue, and it isn't much of one, is there is residual glue from old stickers on the item, although these can removed with a quick application of Goo Gone. This covered sugar bowl is a great addition to anyone's tea service and would also work well as a display piece.
