Description: Here we have a magnificent jazz outing by one of the music's true originals, reedsman extraordinaire ROSCOE MITCHELL: Congliptious, first released in 1968 by the Nessa label, issued in this expanded edition by the same label more then four decades later. Both solo and during his lengthy tenure with the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Roscoe has pushed the envelope as far as any jazz artist... always seeking, always questioning, always placing his considerable skills in a mindblowing variety of musical contexts. This album was issued under Roscoe's name, but was actually recorded by an early incarnation of the Art Ensemble, with Robert Crowder sitting in on drums: Lester Bowie (trumpet, flugelhorn, steer horn, bass whistle, bass drum, siren and gong), Malachi Favors (bass, electric bass, electric guitar, zither and gond), and Roscoe (alto sax, soprano sax, bass sax, recorder, flute and gong). Mitchell, Bowie and Favors are also credited with "little instruments," which include finger cymbals, harmonica, slide whistle, gongs, bells and more. This is the AEC at their unstructured best – exploring and examining sounds from every angle, picking up musical ideas and holding them up to the light, bending them into various new shapes, dismantling them completely... taking themselves (and the listener) on a journey filled with wondrous, unexpected things. And this CD edition of Congliptious makes a great thing fantastic with the addition of four brief but potent bonus tracks from the same sessions. This CD is near mint. It's a promotional copy with a neatly punched hole through the bar code. (Not the jewel case, though.) Track listing 1. Tutankhamen 2. TKHKE 3. Jazz Death? 4. Carefree-Take 3 5. Tatas-Matoes 6.
