Description: Scarce 1907 second edition hardcover copy of "The Romance and Tragedy of a Widely Known Business Man of New York, by himself" by William Ingraham Russell. Inscribed by Russell on front endpaper - see photos. See below for a description of Russell and the nature of the book. It is a whimsical book that touches on his life, experiences and several locations in which he lived. Illustrated with several photographs of the homes discussed in the book. Includes an even scarcer staple-bound pamphlet of "A Sequel Chapter to the Romance and Tragedy of a Widely Known Business Man of New York" tucked inside. In good condition with noticeable wear. Small scuff/scrape along top edge of front board. Light rubbing and surface wear to boards. Faint traces of spotting along exterior edges of book. Crack to binding along the front hinge (and a slightly more serious one to rear hinge), but not severe in either case, and nothing loose or wobbly. Quote and name stamp on front pastedown. Several beginning pages with small smudge/minor dripstains, including to the page with the authors inscription (please note it is not signed by name - it reads 'With the Compliments of the Author - Sept. 7/11." A few pages with a small smudge or stain along far edge. The sequel chapter pamphlet is in fair condition only, and is noticeably smudged, dirty, and with several stains to exterior and a fine mist of staining to several pages on interior - still solid and fully readable. Brief excerpt from an article about Russell and his book in the Patch online newspaper:William Ingraham Russell was likely the wealthiest man in Short Hills when he lived there from 1879 to 1893. Although his autobiographical book, The Romance and Tragedy of a Widely Known Business Man, never reveals his occupation, it suggests he was a commodities broker. His career success and his growing family brought him to the community he called Knollwood, which he saw growing from the ground up as he passed by on the train every day.The Russells moved first into a modest house that still stands at the intersection of Wells Lane and Knollwood, and of which he wrote:"Of course we must have a name for the place. Every one does that, in the country, and we were not to be the exception. One of our boundary lines was a brook and we decided on Brookside Cottage. The stationery and visiting cards were so engraved, when, alas, a few weeks later our brook dried up and we had to select another name.At this time, where the brook had been, a new line of sewer was laid, and my wife suggested Sewerside, but after punishing her with a kiss for her bad pun, I suggested Sunnyside. The name was adopted and to this day the place has retained it.
