Description: Mn. Cordius Rufus | AR Denarius Reference: RRC 463/1B Date: 46 BCE Obverse: RVFVS·IIIVIR; jugate heads of Dioscuri, right, wearing filleted pilei. Border of dots. Reverse: MN·CORDIVS; Venus standing left, holding scales in right hand and sceptre in left hand, with Cupid perched on shoulder. Border of dots. Mint: Rome Size: 17.0 mm Weight: 3.16 grams Struck in the Year of the Consulship of Caesar and Lepidus. Interesting designs on both faces of this nice Republican denarius struck during the dictatorship of Julius Caesar. The Dioscuri are depicted on the obverse and could be a gesture of support and protection for Julius Caesar as he continued his war against Pompey's remaining allies. In April 46 BCE, Caesar would win the penultimate major battle of the civil war at Thaspus in North Africa, effectively ending any threat from the Pompeian faction outside of Spain. The reverse design has more clear significance. Julius Caesar famously claimed ancestry from Venus Genetrix and in September of 46 BCE, Caesar dedicated temple to this goddess in fulfillment of a vow made at the Battle of Pharsalus. A slightly worn example with some cleaning scratches on the obverse and reverse.Comes with old dealer tag. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
