Description: Aurelian | AE Antoninianus Reference: RIC V.1 260, MER-RIC 2562 Date: 271 CE Obverse: IMP AVRELIANVS AVG; bust right, radiate, with drapery to front and rear Reverse: IOVI CONSER; Aurelian, standing right, holding sceptre, receiving globe from Jupiter, standing left, holding sceptre Mint: Serdica Size: 24.8 mm Weight: 4.16 grams A very nice antoninianus of my favorite third century emperor, Aurelian. Struck on a broad, heavy flan, this pre-reform antoninianus still retains some silvering, especially on the obverse. Aurelian reformed the coinage twice during his five-year reign. The first took place between 271-272 CE and featured a slight weight standard increase and a change in the style of the imperial portraiture. The second, larger reform took place in 274 CE. Based on the style of the portrait, this coin likely belongs to the period before the first reform. The imperial portraiture before the first reform closely resembled that of Claudius Gothicus or Quintillus; while the portraits struck after the first reform have a much more calm, even regal, expression on the emperor's face. Compared to post-first and especially post-second reform coins of Aurelian, pre-reform types are relatively rare. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
