THE AGE OF GIANT CORPORATIONS A Microeconomic History of American Business, 1914-1970 Robert Sobel Trusts, holding companies, and large corporations were a significant part of the American scene in 1913. The presidential election of the previous year had revolved around the role the government should play in dealing with them, and to reformers, it seemed that Wall Street, and not Pennsylvania Avenue. or Main Street, was the true center of power in the United States. Yet, at the time, most Americans lived on farms or in small towns and worked for sole proprietorships, partnerships, or for themselves. Small business, not large, was the rule, even though it seemed evident that such would not be the case for long. The attitude of many reformers of the period was typified by President Woodrow Wilson, who yearned for the maintenance of small businesses while recognizing that not much could be done to prevent the growth of the giants. Wilson made knew how an effort, but in 1913, he had hardly accomplished his objectives. For example, he then thought the tariff, not the anti-trust legislation he had sent to Congress, would be the most potent force for industrial control. Such were the methods of the previous century. Harkening back to Jeffersonian ideals, Wilson failed to anticipate the revolutionary industrial and political developments of the next fifty years. The United States was to become the dominant power in the new age of the mutually dependent nation-state and corporation. The growth of this power began. Long before World War I, but it came to fruition in that period. In 1913, the United States was the world's leading debtor nation; four years later, it was its greatest creditor and, by 1919, would be the only first-class power in the world. The gross national product, less than $40 billion in 1913, doubled by the end of the decade and, at the beginning of the present decade, passed the trillion dollar mark. Prest This book describes the industries, the corporations that constituted them, and the businessmen who directed them, in this growth era. It is concerned with the intertwining of political and industrial power and the development of what the author calls "hybrid capitalism." He attempts to analyze the challenges and opportunities American businessmen faced at various times in the last half-century and explain their responses, attitudes, and actions. The American businessman is neither the hero nor the villain of this book, but rather its protagonist. Avoiding the conventional approach used by most economic historians, the author avoids discussions of the general state of the economy. Instead, he concentrates on individual companies and businessmen within industries and their relationships with one another, with technology, and most importantly, with the government. Thus, the general approach is from a perspective of microeconomics and business history rather than of macroeconomics and economic history. Robert Sobel is a professor of history at New College, Hofstra University. Other books by Professor Sobel include The Big Board, A History of the New York Stock Market, Amex: A History of the American Stock Exchange, The Great Bull Market: Wall Street in the 1920s, and Panic on Wall Street: A History of America's Financial Disasters.
