Long before, he had earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Marie Antoinette (1938). His many other films included The African Queen (1951) and Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978). KENDALL (1897-1962) was a British character actor who got occasional starring roles, from Hitchcock's Rich and Strange (1931) to Murder Will Out (1961). HOWARD (1913-1988) played romantic leads, action heroes, and in his later years character roles. He was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Sons and Lovers. Other noteworthy performances include Brief Encounter (the film which made him a star, 1945), The Third Man (1949), Mutiny on the Bounty (as Captain Bligh, 1962) and Gandhi (1982). BERINGER was a British actress whose only starring role was in The October Man (1948). HALLATT played supporting roles in some distinguished British films, including Black Narcissus (1947), Separate Tables (1958) and Room at the Top (1959). Scottish stage actress Herlie played Queen Gertrude opposite two film Hamlets, Laurence Olivier (1948) and Richard Burton (1964). PRYSE (1910-1955) starred in two U.K. films, Valley of Song (1953) and Three Cases of Murder (1955). RIGBY (1878-1951) was featured in many British films from the 1930s until his death, including The Stars Look Down (1939) and The Happiest Days of Your Life (1950). HENSON (1890-1957) starred in British comedy films of the 1930s, including It's a Boy (1934) and The Girl From Maxim's (1936). SOFAER (1896-1988) was an Anglicized Burmese with a somewhat Semitic appearance who capitalized on his visage to portray the title role in Dreyfus (1931), Benjamin Disraeli in Helen Hayes' Victoria Regina on Broadway (1935) and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice (1947). He can be found on U.S. TV re-runs of episodes of Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits and Star Trek. Corpulent BULL (1912-1984) often appeared in films with his lifelong friend Morley. He played the Captain of the Louisa in The African Queen (1951) and the Soviet Ambassador in Dr. Strangelove (1964). He won Britain's Distinguished Service Cross in World War II. FLETCHER (b. 1895) was an English stage and screen actor, seen in films from 1921 (Stella) to 1960 (the TV series The Four Just Men). His roles included Michelangelo in The Cardinal (1936) and Marley's Ghost in a TV presentation of A Christmas Carol (1958). Given the celebrity of this list, the other names merit further research.
