Description: Attractive 1903 Macmillan "extra illustrated" edition of Mrs. Oliphant's "The makers of Florence Dante, Giotto, Savonarola and their city" in a very handsome leather fine binding by Riviere & Son. Interestingly, the binder's stamp says "for the Army & Navy" - I'm guessing this was for the British Army & Navy department store, where fancy stuff like this could be found. With portrait of Savonarola, engraved by H. Jeens from drawings by prof. Delamotte. Gorgeous blue calf leather boards, still wonderfully bright and clear, with fine gilt ornamental borders. Spine features raised bands and panels with elaborate gilt ornamentation. Inside, we find inner gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Extremities rubbed a little, with a little foxing to edges. Dedication, folded note tipped on prelims. Contents include Chapters on: The Poet - Dante; The Cathedral Builders (such as Arnolfo, Giotto, Ghiberti, Donatello, Brunelleeschi); The Monks of San Marco (such as The Angelical Painter, The Good Archbishop, Girolamo Savonarola, The Sperimento, The Prophet's End, The Piagnoni Painters, Michel Angelo).
