Description: This is a rare October 1996 programme (playbill) from the Original West End production of the ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER, DON BLACK and CHRISTOPHER HAMPTON musical "SUNSET BOULEVARD" at the Adelphi Theatre in London. (The London production opened July 12th, 1993 and closed April 5th, 1997 after 1529 performances.) ..... The musical starred RITA MORENO (who replaced PETULA CLARK as "Norma Desmond" during her vacation in September and October 1996), GRAHAM BICKLEY as "Joe Gillis", MICHAEL BAUER as "Max von Mayerling" and FIONA SINNOTT as "Betty Schaefer". The full cast list is shown in the fifth scanned image ..... Side Note: The Original London production starring PATTI LuPONE as "Norma Desmond" was shut down for three weeks in March 1994 for revisions to pattern the show after the Los Angeles production which had received rave reviews. When it reopened on April 19th, 1994 with a second official "opening", the musical had a new song, "Every Movie's a Circus", a new set and two new stars, BETTY BUCKLEY and JOHN BARROWMAN. ELAINE PAIGE replaced BETTY BUCKLEY when she crossed the Atlantic to take over for GLENN CLOSE on Broadway. ELAINE PAIGE repeated the task, taking over for BETTY BUCKLEY in October 1996 in her Broadway debut. PETULA CLARK starred as "Norma Desmond" for the remaining months of the London run .....
