Description: RICHARD E. BYRD. Richard E. Byrd (1888 - 1957) was an American aviator and explorer who was the first to fly over the South Pole and establish the base Little America. He received the Medal of Honor for his flight over the North Pole. IMPORTANT TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY RICHARD E. BYRD REFLECTING ON HIS SECOND ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION (1933-1935) A FEW MONTHS AFTER RETURNING Important typed letter signed by, “R.E. Byrd,” to Arthur A. Zuhn reflecting on his Second Antarctic Expedition (1933-1935) a few months after returning: “I am starting out again on my lecture tour the first part of next month provided I get an Okay from my physician, which I think I will. Unfortunately I will be gone from Boston for about three months, and will be out on the West Coast part of the time. Because I was able to keep working (which was very doubtful for many months following my return) I have no further worries about the Expedition debt. I still owe $38,000, but have a few thousand in the bank against that amount, and expect to pay it all up next year. When this tour is finished, I will have a lot more time to attend to details, and if any of our men are without positions at that time, I will have an opportunity to do some personal soliciting. The great majority of Expedition members, I am glad to say, are getting along satisfactorily. Our book, Discovery, has had excellent reviews, but I am afraid it will not sell as well as hoped until it is discovered that it is not a repetition of my first Antarctic book, Little America.” Zuhn served as a physicist on Byrd’s Second Antarctic Expedition. Because it began during the Great Depression’s prime, Byrd had to rely on small donations across the country to fund the exploration. It was a successful expedition that produced a great deal of scientific knowledge and newly discovered territory. “BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO KEEP WORKING (WHICH WAS VERY DOUBTFUL FOR MANY MONTHS FOLLOWING MY RETURN) I HAVE NO FURTHER WORRIES ABOUT THE EXPEDITION DEBT. I STILL OWE $38,000, BUT HAVE A FEW THOUSAND IN THE BANK AGAINST THAT AMOUNT, AND EXPECT TO PAY IT ALL UP NEXT YEAR.” Byrd adds a brief handwritten postscript, “How are you?,” at the bottom, contains one page on personal letterhead, measures 11 by 8.5 inches, created in Boston on December 31, 1935, and in very fine condition with two small stains to the top edge.
