Description: Richard Aberle Florsheim (1916-1979); "The Beasts"; lithograph on wove watermarked paper; 1946. Edition of 24. Sheet 19 x 11 1/2", plate 15 1/2 x 9 1/2". Signed pencil LR, numbered pencil LL. Some toning to bottom of sheet, mounting residue on reverse, and a tear left side of sheet 1/4" into plate, repaired with archival mending tape. This image (a rare example of Florsheim's post WWII work) is in otherwise extraordinary shape - a rich black background, well inked, showing a stark, brooding almost post-apocalyptic scene of a cadaverous looking bull chewing on a meatless bone. It strongly suggests that Florsheim was fully engaged by, and still digesting, the horrors of total war. Born in Chicago, Florshein briefly attended the University of Chicago before going to New York to study art with Aaron Bohrod in 1934. From 1938-38 he traveled in Europe and the Near East to nurture his artistic skills, studying with Emile Bernard in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Refuses and even sold a painting (Don Quixote) to the Musee du Jeu de Paume. His father cut off his funding in 1939, likely sensing the shifting political winds in Europe, and Florsheim returned to Chicago and became involved with lithography. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942, becoming a cartographer in the Pacific Theater. After the war he resumed his artistic career and exhibited extensively. He helped found the Artist's League of the Midwest with Artist's Equity Association of New York and later became president of National Equity. He exhibited at the Museum Art Institute in the late 40's showed work at Luyber Galleries in NTC. In 1956 he was appointed to the Illinois State Arts Council and was also a member of Audubon Artists and the Society of American Graphic Arts. His work is held by the Art Institute of Chicago (which holds this image), the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and the Whitney Museum.
