Background -Charles Parker Jr. (August 29, 1920 – March 12, 1955), also known as Yardbird and Bird, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Parker was a highly influential jazz soloist and a leading figure in the development of bebop, a form of jazz characterized by fast tempos, virtuosic technique and advanced harmonies. Parker was a blazingly fast virtuoso, and he introduced revolutionary harmonic ideas including rapid passing chords, new variants of altered chords, and chord substitutions. His tone ranged from clean and penetrating to sweet and somber. Parker acquired the nickname "Yardbird" early in his career. This, and the shortened form "Bird", continued to be used for the rest of his life, inspiring the titles of a number of Parker compositions, such as "Yardbird Suite", "Ornithology", "Bird Gets the Worm", and "Bird of Paradise". Parker was an icon for the hipster subculture and later the Beat Generation, personifying the jazz musician as an uncompromising artist and intellectual rather than just an entertainer. Parker's style of composition involved interpolation of original melodies over existing jazz forms and standards, a practice known as contrafact and still common in jazz today. Examples include "Ornithology" (which borrows the chord progression of jazz standard "How High the Moon" and is said to be co-written with trumpet player Little Benny Harris), and "Moose The Mooche" (one of many Parker compositions based on the chord progression of "I Got Rhythm"). The practice was not uncommon prior to bebop, but it became a signature of the movement as artists began to move away from arranging popular standards and toward composing their own material. While tunes such as "Now's The Time", "Billie's Bounce", "Au Privave", "Barbados", "Relaxin' at Camarillo", "Bloomdido", and "Cool Blues" were based on conventional 12-bar blues changes, Parker also created a unique version of the 12-bar blues for tunes such as "Blues for Alice", "Laird Baird", and "Si Si." These unique chords are known popularly as "Bird Changes". Like his solos, some of his compositions are characterized by long, complex melodic lines and a minimum of repetition although he did employ the use of repetition in some tunes, most notably "Now's The Time". Parker contributed greatly to the modern jazz solo, one in which triplets and pick-up notes were used in unorthodox ways to lead into chord tones, affording the soloist with more freedom to use passing tones, which soloists previously avoided. Parker was admired for his unique style of phrasing and innovative use of rhythm. Via his recordings and the popularity of the posthumously published Charlie Parker Omnibook, Parker's identifiable style dominated jazz for many years to come. Other well-known Parker compositions include "Ah-Leu-Cha", "Anthropology", co-written with Gillespie, "Confirmation", "Constellation", "Donna Lee", "Moose the Mooche", "Scrapple from the Apple" and "Yardbird Suite", the vocal version of which is called "What Price Love", with lyrics by Parker. Miles Davis once said, "You can tell the history of jazz in four words: Louis Armstrong. Charlie Parker." Nobody had a larger impact on jazz in a shorter amount of time than Charlie Parker. But it wasn't until the release of this meticulous two-CD compilation in 1997 -- 42 years after Parker's drug-induced death at the age of 34 -- that there was an answer to the question "If I could buy only one Charlie Parker album, which one would it be?" It would be this one! Parker recorded for three labels as a leader, and despite the voluminous numbers of reissues over the years -- many of them tombstone-sized boxes groaning with alternate takes, false starts, and other obsessive snippets -- this is the first time many of his key recordings (including ones under Dizzy Gillespie's leadership) are gathered in one place. And what a place it is! The birth and maturation of bebop are documented in some of the most mercurial, head-spinning records ever recorded -- "Now's the Time," "Koko," "Confirmation," "Groovin' High," "Parker's Mood," etc. In other words, the cornerstone of jazz as we know it. This nicely priced and packaged two-disc set is a convenient, introductory primer compilation to Parker's music for the average listener. What we have here are 38 tracks spread over two discs that touch on Parker's greatest musical achievements; the sides that are considered -- in most cases -- his ground breaking work; his greatest compositions and arrangements in what are generally considered the best-known or most representative versions. What is very important about this box set is that it's the first multi-label best-of view retrospective. Up until this, any such compilations were single-label-driven affairs, but with this, the average listener -- indeed, the novice coming to Parker's music for the first time, having heard the legend but not the message -- has all the important stop-off points. The first disc features all the Guild and Musicraft sides with Dizzy Gillespie collected here, followed by the ground breaking Dial and Savoy singles. The second disc continues Bird's seminal recordings for Dial and Savoy, plus a brace of important sides cut for Granz' Clef label are here. Following those are the inclusion of three performances from Summit Meeting At Birdland, taken from a live radio broadcast of an all-star lineup featuring Bird, Dizzy Gillespie and Bud Powell. While the Bird-with-strings sessions are Parker's all-time best-selling recordings, it's no small surprise that these tracks were also the licensing glitch that keeps this project from being truly complete. But certainly the next best thing are the live recordings of Bird's quintet with strings and oboe from the Legendary Rockland Palace Concert, selections of which close out the second disc and this compilation. While naysayers will carp about what isn't here, the fact remains that this is simply the best introduction to Bird's music. - Cub Koda "Yardbird Suite" is a bebop standard composed by jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker in 1946. The title derives from Parker's nickname "Bird", respectively "Yardbird". Far from being a suite, the song follows an AABA form. The "graceful, hip melody, became something of an anthem for beboppers.” Although, like Bob Dorough wrote, fans used to follow Parker everywhere he played and often taped his performances, there are only three known recordings of Parker himself playing the tune. The first two were recorded with a septet at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on March 28, 1946. The session was supervised and produced by Ross Russell for his Dial Records label. Besides Parker on alto saxophone was Miles Davis on trumpet, Lucky Thompson on tenor saxophone, pianist Dodo Marmarosa, Arvin Garrison on rhythm guitar, bassist Vic McMillan, and Roy Porter on drums. The last take of the tune of originally four became the master (takes two and three are lost), released as 78 shellac single (D 1003). Never copyrighted, the track was frequently reissued on single 10" EP and, since the mid-1950s, on LP on various labels, in most part together with Parker's other Dial recordings although often also on albums assigned to Miles Davis. The third known recording of "Yardbird Suite" was a session at the home of Chuck Copely in Hollywood, on February 1, 1947. The track itself is incomplete and, like the two versions of "Lullaby in Rhythm" recorded that day, of poor quality, but nevertheless released on Spotlite, initially in 1972 on Lullaby in Rhythm Featuring Charlie Parker. The Charlie Parker Septet's 1946 master recording of the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2014. This two-CD set is an ideal introduction to the music of Charlie Parker and the bop revolution. Its 38 tracks are culled from several labels, including Savoy and Dial, with many of them recorded between 1946 and 1949, the altoist's most creative period and the years in which he was reshaping jazz. This is music of luminous vitality--whether rapid-fire and manic, witty or tender. Musical ideas and feelings spun from Parker's horn with divine ease, every newly minted phrase drenched in meaning. Parker was changing the way the best young musicians played--whether saxophonists, pianists, or drummers--and it's apparent here in the supporting work of Miles Davis, Max Roach, Bud Powell, and a host of others. - Stuart Broomer The subtitle of this set, "The Ultimate Charlie Parker Collection," is not much of an exaggeration. While not comprehensive (completists will want to turn to the Dial, Savoy, and Verve box sets), YARDBIRD SUITE may be the finest straightforward overview of Charlie Parker's career available on the market. Beautifully packaged and sequenced, this 2-disc, 38-track collection includes a large percentage of the legendary saxophonist's essential sides, spanning early cuts with Dizzy Gillespie's group in 1945 through Parker's performances with strings at the 1952 Rockland Palace concert.Included are the original recordings of "Now's The Time," "Moose The Mooche," "Ornithology," "Donna Lee," "Chasin' The Bird," "Scrapple From The Apple," and "Laura," just to name a few of Parker's immortal classics. The musicians on these sides read like a who's who of the bebop revolution-including Dizzy Gillespie, Al Haig, Lucky Thompson, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Buddy Rich, Miles Davis, and Max Roach. While one wishes to avoid the clichT, Bird's graceful, revolutionary alto lines indeed sound as fresh and exhilarating here as they did when they were first recorded. The 60-page booklet, which contains wonderful photos and liner notes, is an added bonus. Superior music perfectly presented, YARDBIRD SUITE is a must.
