Description: Repertoire of the Bolshoi Theater, 1776-1955. The book was written by the indomitable compiler Vasilii Fedorov, who had an encyclopedic knowledge of Russia's performing arts. It contains illustrations and has separate annotated indexes for operas and ballets, composers and librettists, and to actors, singers, conductors, artists, and others, and even an index to people not included in other indexes. Throughout the book the reader will find unique detailed descriptions by Fedorov of the major events related to the Bolshoi Theater, such as fires and rebuilding and commentaries on the flow of foreign troupes and on political undercurrents. The book is also heavily footnoted by both Fedorov and the Editor. The materials used in compiling this catalog came from The Bolshoi Theater Museum, The A. A. Bakhrushin Theatrical Museum, TsGALI (Central State Archive for Literature and Arts, St. Petersburg), and the Central Research Library of the Russian Theatrical Performers’ Union. Fedorov also used related materials in his enormous personal collection of memorabilia, including theater posters and programs, and commentaries originally published in Moskovskie vedomosti and a wide variety of other newspapers and journals. Myriad entries in the English edition have been verified against online sources, including the archives of the Bolshoi Theater. The translation was created in the U.S. and Russia. Although Fedorov, a great Russian historian of the theater and music and bibliographer, expected to see his magnum opus published within a few years after he had completed his work, political currents prevented that from happening, and he died, sadly, without ever seeing it in print. The manuscript languished afterward for 25 years before being offered by Vyacheslav Nechaev to Norman Ross for publication. The work was typed in Moscow and published in New York in Russian a few years later, but only 50 copies exist around the world, in libraries and private collections. Published by agreement with the Central Research Library of the Russian Theatrical Performers’ Union. With an introductory essay by Vyacheslav Petrovich Nechaev, Director of the Central Research Library Of the Russian Theatrical Performers’ UnionExtensively indexed and footnoted.
