Description: REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 5th OF NOVEMBER Gunpowder Plot Rebellion Slogan Button A 1.25” pinback button with the phrase Remember Remember the 5th of November. The Gunpowder Plot of 1605, in earlier centuries often called the Gunpowder Treason Plot or the Jesuit Treason, was an unsuccessful attempted regicide against King James I. The plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on November 5, 1605. Conspirator Guy Fawkes was given charge of the explosives. But the plotters were betrayed by an anonymous letter to the authorities. Hearing that the plot had been discovered, most of the conspirators fled from London, but some were captured and questioned brutally. At their trial, eight of the surviving conspirators, including Fawkes, were convicted and sentenced to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Fawkes managed to jump from the gallows and break his neck, avoiding the agony of the gruesome latter part of his execution. November 5th firework displays and bonfire parties are common throughout Britain. Children made "guys"—effigies supposedly of Fawkes—usually made from old clothes stuffed with newspaper, and fitted with a grotesque mask, to be burnt on bonfires. Fawkes is regarded by some as a martyr, political rebel or freedom-fighter, and the Guy Fawkes mask was adopted as a symbol by the Internet hacking collective Anonymous. “Remember, remember, the Fifth of November” was a folk verse about the event. In the 2005 ITV programme The Gunpowder Plot: Exploding the Legend, a full-size replica of the House of Lords was built and destroyed with barrels of gunpowder, totalling 1 tonne of explosives. In 2024, the US Presidential Election will be decided on November 5th! Oh the irony! Wear this button while misusing wheelbarrows, while adjusting your mask, or while drawing and quartering a painting of the King.
