Description: This exceptional piece of period lighting was made in France and is one of the earliest types of domestic ceiling lights, dating probably from the 1900s. The top of the cream glazed ornate ceramic counterweight has two wheels through which electric flex runs up to a wheel hidden inside a matching ceiling rose. The mechanism supports a heavy opaline floral, art nouveau style glass shade which can be raised up or down, depending on where you want the light and the atmosphere you want to create. Very often, these were hung in parlours in French homes, and this would have been an expensive item in its day, taking pride of place in one of the better rooms. Fully extended, the light is over 190cm long - suitable for the very high ceilings of grander houses. Fully retracted, the length is around 94cm. You can, however, reduce (or extend) these lengths with shorter or longer cable. In superb condition, we have refurbished each piece and adapted the pulley to accept modern 3-core silk twisted fabric flex. It is now ready to be wired directly into the ceiling. The new bulbholder inside the shade takes a bayonet fitting. The counterweight is filled with its original lead shot. We visit France regularly to find similar pieces of gorgeous period lighting, as well as interesting antique and vintage items for the home. Bookmark us to stay up to date with our latest finds!
