Description: Redheap by Norman Lindsay (Hardcover, 1959) Rare 1st Australian Edition. Redheap NORMAN LINDSAY Here is a novel of small-town life in Australia, richly alive and funny enough to make you laugh aloud. Redheap is the second of Norman Lindsay's novels to be published. It was originally issued in 1930 and immediately banned in Australia. This edition is the first to be made available to the Australian public. To quote the original publisher's description: 'It is a remorseless study of small-town life; in one sense to be compared to Mr Sinclair Lewis's Main Street, yet more solid than that magnificent tour de force of journalism, and with a more mature and definite philosophy behind it." Whilst the pattern of juvenile behaviour may have changed in outward appearance since Redheap days, the instinct that is behind the wildness of youth with its urgent quest for real experience is unchanged. Norman Lindsay was born at Creswick, Victoria, in 1879, the fourth son of Dr Robert Lindsay whe migrated from Londonderry, Ireland, His mother was the eldest daughter of the Rev. Thomas Williams, a notable missionary and anthropologist. Norman Lindsay is probably the most controversial figure in Australian art. His line drawings, etchings, watercolours and oils have often created a sensation when shown to the public. As a writer, he has achieved equal fame in the United States and Great Britain, as well as in Australia. His works include: The Magic Pudding, Saturdee, A Curate in Bohemia, Creative Effort, The Cautious Amorist (also banned in Australia), Pan in the Parlor, Age of Consent and Cousin from Fiji. It would be impossible in this small space to give even a reasonable picture of Norman Lindsay, his talents and his influence. He is considered by many to be a great leader in cultural life in Australia; certainly he has been a great inspiration to many of our writers and poets. Mr Douglas Stewart in his essay The Flesh and the Spirit' says: 'When he talks about poetry to a poet, it is with the assurance of a critic who has written on the subject in the Bulletin, in Vision and in the Lone Hand, and who is an expert on the men he most admires, Shakespeare, Burns, Byron and Browning.
