History of the art:The origins of the Victorian Coin Enamellists: During the last quarter of the 19th century, the use of vividly enamelled coins, mounted as brooches or pendants, became very popular. The first pieces seem to have been produced in Birmingham by William Roberts but the undisputed master of the art was Edwin Steel. Fine pieces were also produced in Paris by Louis Millenet. Production stopped in 1900 when Edwin Steel died and in the 1920s when Louis Millenet stopped production. Today's process consists of applying each colour and baking in the correct sequence with a hard coating that is specially formulated for maximum clarity being applied to deepen and enhance the colour and protect the surface.
