It is silk and has staining, small holes on edges. It measures 35 X 24 inches. I bought this in an American Legion Yard Sale in 1978 near Hickory, North Carolina. The veteran, James Harrwell, who sold it to me worked in the mills and said that the flag had come to him from his father Karl. He didn’t know any more about the flag except that he thought his grandparents had once owned it. Thirty-nine star flags are an oddity in that their star count was never official. They were made at two different times, initially in 1876 and later in 1889. In 1876, before the admission of Colorado, flag makers speculated that an additional territory would also be admitted therewith.
