Description: RARE LATE 19TH-EARLY 20TH CENTURY LARGE ART NOUVEAU 'THE HEROLD' SMOKED SARDINES, EUROPEAN TIN LITHOGRAPHED ENAMEL PAINTED FAUX BOOK BOX, PACKED by H. VALVATNE SUNDE, NORWAY, B. M. Shipman, New York Sole Agent(Circa 1890-1915)Late 19th to early 20th century European tin faux book boxes & mercantile advertising DIMENSIONS:10 1⁄4" Height x 10" Width x 4" Depth DESCRIPTION: Very scarce and still in fairly well-preserved overall antique condition. This European (Norway) late 19th to early 20th century large lithographed enamel faux book box mercantile advertising 'The Herold' by H. Valvatne of Sunde, Norway has a few surface scuffs and abrasions but is largely undamaged. There are no seam fractures, noticeable dings or dents in its sidewalls or body. The tin faux book box is quite large, measuring 10 1⁄4" in height by 10" in width by 4" in depth. It has mottled page ends which resemble the decorative edging of real books. The tin's spine is rounded, giving the faux book box the impression it's a real book with a lifted, curved leather-bound spine. Gold gilt and orange lined white typography complete the deep viridian green front and back cover and the red-orange colored spine. The inside hinged top lid when open, features a yellow gold background, with red orange typography and an image of a can of sardines with its tin lid being rolled open, exposing the sardines inside. From Sunde, Norway comes this really wonderful and rather scarce, large tin faux book box titled 'The Herald,' by H. Valvatne, providing advertising for Norwegian canned sardines. It has very nice Art Nouveau typography which seems to reveal it was produced at the very end of the 19th century or toward the very beginning of the 20th century, sometime between 1890 and 1915. A great antique early advertising artifact. Great. CONDITION: Fair to Good overall antique condition.
