Based on the Dark Horse Comics character created by Mike Mignola, the film was produced by Revolution Studios, Lawrence Gordon/Lloyd Levin Productions, and Dark Horse Entertainment, and distributed by Revolution and Sony Pictures Releasing's Columbia Pictures. It was the first live-action film in the HELLBOY franchise. This "confidential" case file is from Professor Broom, Director of B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense), with glossy photographs printed on authentic Kodak and Fujifilm photo paper and small envelopes filled with "evidence" (Baby Ruth wrapper, cut wires, aquarium gravel, etc.) on the characters Hellboy, Professor Broom, Liz Broom, Abe Sapien, John Myers, Grigori Rasputin, Sammael, and Kroenen.
