Description: Rare Polychrome Tibetan Wood Vajra/Dorje Mandala Table – 19th Century or earlier A beautiful and rare Tibetan wood mandala table with a five-pronged Vajra (Tibetan: dorje or rdo-rje) at the center. Safely dated to the 19th century or earlier, the mandala is hand-painted with gold and polychrome pigments. NB: To fully appreciate the complexity of the figures and scenarios around the mandala, magnification may be required. The mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol that can be understood from two perspectives: Externally, as a visual representation of the universe, or internally, as a guide for several Buddhist traditions, including as an aid in meditation. Here, the vajra is at the center of the mandala, which represents the point of perfect stability in the universe. In Buddhist Tantric traditions, the vajra is a symbol for the nature of reality (sunyata), indicating endless creativity, potency, and skillful activity. The vajra also symbolize the Buddhist Vajrayana tradition; the impenetrable, immovable and indestructible state of the enlightened mind.
