Description: Descriptio Nova Imperii Malabar. This important engraving is from Awnsham Churchill's "A Collection of Voyages and Travels". The first edition was published in 1704. Part of the engravings we're able to present came from the rare supplement by Thomas Osborne. --- Churchill and Osborne's work was celebrated for its range of illustrations and original accounts. The supplement included information from Lord Oxford's Library. Some of the illustrations in the work pertained to the following voyages: Brawern and Herckemann's Voyage to Chili in 1642 and 1643; Captain John Monck's voyage in 1619 and 1620 to Hudson's Straits, to discover a passage between Greenland and America; Nieuhoff's voyages to Brazil and the East Indies; John Smith's travels in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America from the years 1592 to 1629; the life of Columbus by his son; Barbot's description of North and South Guinea; and an account of the discovery of America from Herrera's History of the West Indies. --- "This is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts. The third edition is considered to be the best edition because of its greater inclusion and its copious index. This set contains the rare two volumes, known as the Harleian Voyages, compiled from Lord Oxford's library by Osborne." (Hill) --- The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be some minor imperfections or occasional faint offset to the engravings in this work. Occasionally some of the engraving lines will appear yellowish, but this is a trick of the photography process not an imperfection on the engraving. Please review the images carefully for condition! Paper Size ~ 16 1/2" by 13 3/4" This important decorative map is the work of Philip Baldaeus, a Dutch missionary in the Malabar and Coramandel districts of India. Depicted here is the area from the southernmost region of India, extending as far north as Surat, including a portion of the Kathiawar Peninsula. Towns and cities are all noted along the coast line such as Mumbai (Bombay), Calicut (Calcutta) and Goa to name a few. Rivers are named and known topographical features delineated. The map is oriented east, with the compass rose pointing to the left, and embellished with a distance scale on a plaque beneath measuring dividers and maps. Beautiful condition. No major issues. Minor toning. Solid fold line in middle as issued.
