Scarce and one ofthe more popular printings of this important work. Jerry Kay’s (Xeno Publications) 1967 First Edition of Liber AL, an important publication, both for the Los Angeles area and for Thelema generally.Xeno Publications operated in the late 1960s out of 6311 Yucca Street in Hollywood, a proverbial “stone’s throw” (1.7 miles) to 1746 Winona Blvd, where Agape Lodge no. 2, Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.) had been founded in 1935. (Agape Lodge would eventually move to Pasadena and close permanently in 1949.) At the time of this Book of the Law’s publication in 1967, Crowley’s works were extremely difficult to get a hold of. There was only one other edition of The Book of the Law published in 1967, an edition in 1000 numbered copies by the Solar Lodge Press. Before this year, no edition had been published anywhere in the world since 1942, by the Church of Thelema / OTO, out of Pasadena. By publishing this inexpensive version of Thelema’s main holy text, Kay was doing a valuable service. (In 1969, Kay would go on to publish a version of the Crowley / Harris Thoth tarot deck.)Overall, 1967 was a time in history when Crowleyanity was reawakening, especially in Southern California. A small group of people led by Grady Louis McMurtry and others were planning to re-start the OTO, trying to reunite members of the old Agape Lodge. This popular edition in Good condition has 44pp. The covers are a bit darkened as common, hint of rubbing. The right side of the top edge has evidently received a small blow from above, slightly bending that corner’s pages backward. Internally tight, clean and unmarked. Scarce.
