Description: From a local estate, we offer a rare Japanese woodblock triptych depicting women sewing at a kimono factory. The artist is Chikanobu Yoshu, a leading woodblock print artist of the Meiji Period. The grouping of three prints were created in 1885 as a wave of national nostalgia for a Japan past prompted designs exploring traditional Japanese culture, values, and heroes. Through explorations of female beauty, Chikanobu personified moments in Japanese history through fashion, manners and customs. The three prints measure 36 x 70 cm (approx 14 x 27 1/2 inches) and are tacked to a backing sheet. There is some fading of color from the example I found at the Showa Women's University Library: https://www.ro-da.jp/swu/contents/1797?fbclid=IwAR3mqfU82_HSCwHrj_d8twBBPjVcZ337xE2Ai1wkBgx2_wQDk5QYKeB0Z7k Framed together these will create a colorful depiction of Japanese life never to be seen again.
