Description: Store Item: Rare GRIFFITH OWEN Philadelphia Tall Case Grandfather Clock circa 1790 Description: Clock features two carved rosettes with three urn shaped finials on the top of the hood, leaf tip molding below the hood with columns running on each side of the hood. The dial features painted floral designs in each corner with date dial and moon phase and sweep second hand. Case features shaped door with inlays resting on bracket feet. Owen Griffith was a well respected clock maker born in 1759, at the age of 14 he started his apprenticeship under Philadelphia clockmaker Jacob Godshalk, who later married Griffith Owen's sister. In 1781, Griffith Owen took over Godshalk's business due to his death. Around that time, Mr. Owen took over the responsibility for the maintenance of the clocks located in what is now know as Independence Hall. Owen died in Norristown on April 29, 1820. An important example of a Philadelphia Chippendale tall case clock and a true showpiece for your home. Comes with pendulum, two weights and crank winder. Condition Report: Clock has just be maintained, cleaned and is working condition. Case has scuffs, scratches, wear and signs of refinishing as expected with age and usage, but shows beautifully.
