Description: Rare, Beautiful First Edition Copy of The Caves of the Great Hunters by Hans Baumann (1954). The dust jacket has some minor wear, and the book itself is in Very Good condition. The pages are crisp and clean, and the illustrations look gorgeous and bright. Hans Baumann, born in 1914 in Bavaria, began adult life as a schoolteacher in a Bavarian village, and later became a writer for the young. A much-traveled veterinarian fired the young man's imagination with tales of the painted caves and the bisons of the Altamira. As soon as post-war conditions permitted, the author, with his wife, visited the most important caves in southwestern France and northern Spain. He was struck by the fact that many of these caves had been discovered by youngsters, and had the good fortune to have as his guides some of the original discoverers. In Lascaux, Marcel Ravidat and Jacques Marcal told him of the thrill and the dangers of the first discovery. In Trois Freres, he was taken to the caves by Count Louis Begouen, who, as a boy, had been the first to negotiate the difficult entrance. Simon de Altamira, now a man of seventy, was his guide in Altamira. The author was allowed "to make himself at home" in the caves, even in those parts which are not accessible to the general public. He re-lived, with his guides, the excitement of the unforgettable moments when the now famous pictures of bison and stags, horses and cattle were first seen in the gleam of torches and flashlights.
