Description: Desvres THREE-LEGGED CAT- French Faience Geneviève Alizier, Antique, circa 1895 This is a THREE-LEGGED CAT - a French Faience Desvres Style Polychrome Antique Figurine of the 19th Century. This DESVRES THREE-LEGGED CAT is modeled in deep relief; the hand painting, décor and glaze are very well done. This Polychrome Antique Figurine is decorated with stylized accents, and a typical palette of Geneviève Alizier, including a creamy white background decorated with blue, sage green, iron red, light magenta, and yellow; the base foot is glazed with an unglazed rim foot. There is a makers’ mark on the underside, in dark manganese script under the glaze, AG, being that of Geneviève Alizier* of the Desvres region. The estimated date is circa 1895. This French Faience Antique THREE-LEGGED CAT Figurine by Geneviève Alizier is in fair to poor condition- its left front leg which was broken off and cannot be found. The Cat still stands upright on his own three feet. Otherwise, condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, glaze losses, firing flaws, crazing and fretting. Overall, this item is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. Please see all photos which are a part of this description. Please note that this item is photographed in natural light; shadows that may appear as irregularities are not necessarily chips, cracks, or discoloration. This item is sold "AS IS", WITH MISSING LEG, as described. Dimensions: 2.4 In. Tall X 1.7 In. Wide X 5.0 In. Deep Weight: 2.6 Oz. This is Geneviève Alizier Desvres style faience, fine country French art pottery. This style includes production techniques whereby tin glazes and decorations are applied and worked in stages upon a modeled terra cotta pottery form, and then fired several times in a kiln. The following (obtained through GOOGLE) helps to explain the somewhat obscure makers’ mark of Geneviève Alizier: “THE ORIGIN OF THE ‘Ag’ MARK IS BEST DESCRIBED BY FRANCOIS PITON THE AUTHOR OF THE AUTHORITATIVE BOOK 'C’est du Desvres'. The following is a transcript of a conversation between Francois Piton, the author of the authoritative book ‘C’est du Desvres’ and Philippe Knoblock another well known Desvres Specialist explaining the origin of the ‘Ag’ mark on certain pieces of Desvres. Mr Knoblock says’ ‘The Alizier family, two brothers and a sister, Geneviève regularly bought several biscuits (raw and undecorated pieces) at the FC [Fourmaintraux Courquin, circa 1875- 1900] factory, decorated them themselves and marked them with their own signature, and cooked them for the last cooking in the FC factory. that's the reason why you can find the same pieces, from the same molds, but with different decors and signatures. Yes, I've met in Desvres this man, as each year; he's a great collector of Desvres, and has, each year, a surprising piece to show. It was the case this year, where he had a piece signed FC and I had the same piece signed AG. As we were talking about this, Mr Philippe KNOBLOCK ( a Desvres 18th specialist) came and told us he was certain that the ALIZIER family (2 brothers and a sister, Geneviève). I regularly bought several biscuits (raw and undecorated pieces) at the FC factory, decorated them themselves and marked with their own signature, and cooked them for the last cooking in the FC factory. It's the reason why you can find the same pieces, from the same molds, but with different decors and signatures.”NOTE: There are two similar listings on Etsy- a Dog for $188.88, and a Cat for $288.88.
