WIGGIN, DOVER, NEW HAMPSHIRE MID-19TH CENTURY, AMERICAN FOLK ART, NEW ENGLAND PRIMITIVE, ANTIQUE SALT-GLAZED PUTTY WHITE STONEWARE 1 GALLON CERAMIC HANDLED JUG, with COBALT BLUE ENHANCED, STAMPED MAKER'S MARK on UPPER FRONT SHOULDER, WIRE CUT BASEPLATE, WHEEL THROWN BODY & AFFIXED, SLAB-CONSTRUCTED HANDLED, featuring TWO BURNT SIENNA, KILN SCORCH SURFACE MARKS[This rare mid-19th century Dover, New Hampshire C. W. & S. L. Wiggin, American folk art, New England primitive, antique salt glazed stoneware ceramic one gallon handled jug, has two condition issues needing mentioning. The first is a small knock & subsequent minor ceramic loss on the side of the jug's handle, with an associated line (hairline crack) running horizontally across the handle. There are also two moderate instances of ceramic loss on the jug's knobby pouring spout, from previous knocks to it. But perhaps more importantly, is the upside down letter 'V' occurring in the word 'DoVer' of the hand set lettering of the cobalt blue slip glazed maker's mark, found on the front shoulder of the jug. This is quite unusual & adds & doesn't diminish the appeal of this scarce Dover, NH stoneware one gallon jug. The jug's otherwise clean & in good overall condition. Interestingly, there are two kiln scorch marks, burned into the jug's sidewalls from the kiln, adding to its decorative appeal.](Circa 1845-1865)Mid-19th century American folk art, New England primitive antique salt-glazed, hand decorated stoneware ceramic handled jugs & crocks DIMENSIONS: 12 ½" Height x 7" Width Weight: 5 lbs. 10 oz.
